Economic and market background
There was much jubilation in the ‘rhubarb triangle' of Yorkshire (in the north of England) in February when the European Union recognized Yorkshire forced rhubarb, which is grown indoors and harvested by candlelight, as a delicacy on a par with champagne and Parma ham.. Financial-market participants, meanwhile, continued in the opening months of the year to cheer the cleansing and highly stimulative actions of the leading central banks and governments, which have appeared to ‘force' economic activity around the world and to nurture rising asset prices.
