Oil well blow-outs. Sweatshops. Carbon emissions. Fraudulent accounting. ESG ('environmental, social and governance') issues hit headlines in varied and often controversial guises, but what does ESG really mean for companies and investors? In this article we answer this question by exploring some of the most prevalent current challenges for companies, and explaining our understanding of, and approach to, ESG at Newton.
ESG, which is synonymous with 'responsible investment', is, we believe, vital for investors who wish to maximise long-term returns in today's challenging investment environment. Put simply, companies which identify and manage corporate governance and social responsibility challenges effectively on a consistent and holistic basis are well-placed to meet investors' long-term financial objectives.
