Welcome to Newton's investment training centre

Newton's investment training site has been designed specifically to complement The Pensions Regulator's Scope Guidance with regards to investment issues, and should be of interest to anyone wanting to develop their investment knowledge.

The training programme is varied and caters for different requirements. It includes:

  2. Spotlight sessions
  3. Online training

There is no charge for participation in any of our investment training events. Spaces may be regulated if a large number of people from one scheme or company wish to attend.

    Basics of investments sessions

    These half-day sessions are offered both to persons who are new to their role, and to those with experience and would like an up-to-date overview of the basics of investments. The sessions are based on sections 3a-e, 6b and 9a, 9d, 9e, 9g of the Pensions Regulator's revised scope and guidance framework for appropriate Trustee Knowledge and Understanding (TKU). Please feel free to register for all three sessions, or just for those that interest you.

    Course content and dates:

    Basics of investments: Session 2 - September 2011

    • - The balance between risk and reward
    • - The characteristics of alternative asset classes and financial instruments
    • - The process of strategic asset allocation
    • - The structure of investment portfolios, including:
      • - active v passive management
      • - pooled funds v segregated portfolios
      • - rebalancing portfolios

    Basics of investments: Session 3 - March 2012

    • - Measurement of performance, using indices, benchmarks and targets
    • - The mechanisms for monitoring investment arrangements and fund managers
    • - The importance of responsible ownership of assets, including engagement, corporate governance and voting

    Spotlight sessions

    Newton's 'spotlight' sessions are interactive. They are designed to cover current issues and explore certain topics in more detail.

    What would you like to discuss?

    Ahead of each session we will ask registered delegates to vote for a topic of interest. We propose one of the following topics to be covered at each session:

    • - Asset allocation
    • - Emerging markets
    • - Fixed-income market challenges
    • - Governance

    Please vote for your preferred topic via our online poll.

    The topic will be announced approximately one month before each event.

    eLearningThe elearning site has been designed specifically to complement The Pensions Regulator's Scope Guidance with regards to investment issues, but should be of interest to anyone wanting to develop their investment knowledge.

    It contains over 20 modules, from which you can pick and choose and which you can complete in your own time. To view a list of the courses that are available, click here. Either complete them all or just brush up on certain elements.

    In June 2009 Newton took part in 'A Trustee's Guide to Investment 2009', an educational film for trustees of UK pension funds. This film features some of the pensions and investment community's most experienced and respected commentators about the challenges facing trustees. It covers a range of topics including governance, asset allocation and asset classes. The film is 55 minutes long, but can also be watched as standalone 'chapters' if you prefer.
